(Smoke Alarms) Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including basements (on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs). If you have levels of your home without bedrooms, install alarms in living room (den/family room), or near upper level stairway, or in both locations. If your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them. The alarm may still sound when tested but it may not activate in the event of a fire.
(Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms) Install carbon monoxide alarms in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height. CO alarms should be installed in any residence that has gas appliances or equipment.
